Turn Your Control over to Your Higher Power
Having a willingness to turn things over and a desire to stop “controlling” are essential in recovery.
This is difficult. Your addiction has fooled you into thinking you’re still in control and that you know what’s best for you.
For that reason, it’s absolutely necessary to completely turn things over and give up your self-centered way of life. When you turn things over, you are deciding that your Higher Power can guide your life rather than you trying to control your life. This takes practice.
You’ve now completed Step 3, congratulations!
You’ve been answering a lot of questions that have most likely brought some painful memories and old behaviors to the surface again. You may be feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, and guilty. This is completely normal.
Please know that it is important to acknowledge the uncomfortable actions of your addiction, own up to them, take responsibility, and then know and accept that they were a direct result of your old addictive lifestyle. Please recognize that you are working toward a new, healthy lifestyle that you can feel good about. Do not hesitate to reach out to a mental health provider to help you process these feelings.
